A poker bankroll is a set amount a person can afford to lose. A challenge for all poker players is managing their bankroll. Many risk to play over their heads. This more often than not will lead to trouble.

Managing a bankroll in Texas holdem tournaments play is just as important as managing a bankroll in cash games. No responsible poker player should every lose more than they can afford to. When they do, a poker habit can easily morph into a poker problem. Using good bankroll management is one way to have a successful poker playing experience.

Stay Grounded

Even the best Texas holdem players in the world know they cannot win every tournament. As enticing as a good score may seem, it is unrealistic to shoot for the stars repeatedly. Stay grounded when laying out the framework of your tournament bankroll. Keep in mind the inevitable swings and streaks in the nature of poker. Expect to lose before you expect to win. With enough patience, and a thorough grasp on the game, you can make money by playing low stakes poker.

A General Rule

It's widely acknowledged that a Texas holdem tournament bankroll should consist of at least 20 buy-ins. If you have a bankroll of $1000, to manage your bankroll effectively you should be playing $50 tournaments. By playing good and consistent poker at your bankroll level, you will be able to last a long time, and eventually come out ahead. This means don't get anxious and start playing $200 tournaments. If you want to play $200 tournaments, have a $4000 bankroll.

Be Prepared To Drop Down

If you're bankroll has dropped from $1000 to $600, instead of playing $50 tournaments, maybe you should drop down to $30 events. The name of the game is to stay alive. The last thing you want to do is blow your bankroll. Then you won't be able to play poker without the risk of losing money you cannot afford. If you drop down, it's not the end of the world. Simply build yourself back up and then start to play in higher stakes games.

Bonus Hunters Need Not Apply

When playing online a Texas holdem bonus will not affect a tournament player's bankroll. Most online bonuses are contingent on a player engaging in rake games, which is a whole other type of poker than a tournament. When considering a bankroll for tournament play, be legitimate and honest with yourself and you will find yourself playing affordable poker for a long time.

Cash Out Winnings

When configuring a poker bankroll, by all means set a limit for when you want to cash out winnings. Poker is a game where a player has an opportunity to earn money. Don't be afraid to cash out. Are you playing for health, or are you playing to win?
