If having casino-quality poker chips is not your concern and you’re willing to play with lightweight plastic chips, you can easily buy them in your nearest box store(Wal-Mart, Kmart, Target, Zellers, etc) and they won’t cost much. You can buy a set of plastic chips that come in a travel case that includes 2 decks of cards and 500 chips for as low as $20.00 to $30.00.

If you desire a better tactile poker experience, investing into clay chips will add much more enjoyment into your poker games.

Clay chips come in six weights:

  • 7.5 grams
  • 8.5 grams
  • 9.0 grams
  • 11.5 grams
  • 13.0 grams
  • 13.5 grams

How heavy you want your play chips to be is a matter of personal taste. I recommend 11.5 grams, which is the standard weight throughout casino’s, but you should try sampling other weights before making a big purchase.

Clay and composite playing chips are available in a single solid color, two colors, and three colors. Two and three-color poker chips have an excellent look, but you should expect to pay considerably more for three-color chips.

They also come in a variety of design styles, including three that are most fairly common:

  • Suited – Four card suits are imprinted around the chip
  • Diamond – A series of diamonds are imprinted around the chip
  • Diced – Each side of a die is imprinted around the chip

How many chips should you buy?

The two basic options are 300 chips or 500 chips. There are also sets with 1000 chips available.

300 poker chips would accommodate up to five players in a average holdem game. 500 poker chips may accommodate a full table of 10 players. When considering whether to purchase a set of 300 chips or a set of 500 chips, be sure to do the math and determine the cost per-chip so you know which set is the better deal.
