Texas Holdem can be played with as few as two players, or as many as ten at a single table. The game begins with two players, left of the dealer, placing an initial bet. This is called posting the blinds. According to the official texas holdem rules and regulations, there are no antes but forced bets, or blinds, are used.

The official texas holdem rules explain that the person to the left of the dealer posts a bet called the small blind, which is usually equal to half of the minimum bet. The person to the left of the small blind posts the big blind, which is equal to the full minimum bet.The dealer shuffles one full deck and each player is dealt two cards face down. These are called your hole or pocket cards. Here is how a typical hand is played:

texas holdem rule #1: PREFLOP - After the cards are dealt, a round of betting starts with the person to the left of the two blinds. This round is usually referred to by the term pre-flop. Players can call the big blind, raise, or fold. The player on the big blind has the option to check.

texas holdem rule #2: THE FLOP - Following the pre-flop betting, the dealer burns (or disregards) one card from the deck and deals three cards face up on the table called the flop. These are community cards. Players combine these cards with their hole cards to make a five carded poker hand. Another round of betting takes place starting with the first person to the left of the dealer.

(Burning cards are necessary to prevent any cheating and is apart of playing regulations.)

texas holdem rule #3: THE TURN - Another cards is burnt, and a fourth card is dealt to the table, known as the turn or fourth street. A third round of betting takes place.

texas holdem rule #4: THE RIVER - Finally, one more card is burnt, and a fifth card or the river is dealt to the table. A final round of betting takes place and the active players hands are shown.

As mentioned earlier, the five cards shown face up on the table are community cards. Poker hands are formed by combining the five community cards and your two hole cards to create a five card poker hand; the best hand wins the pot. And that concludes our lesson on the official texas holdem rules.
